So, first things first, buying any commercial aviation part or component will typically come with some supporting documents such as a Release certificate (8130), shop report, non-incident statement (NIS) and trace/transfer of ownership; however buying an APU requires a lot more information and historical data than your typical component.
For most APUs trading in the aftermarket today the average age of an APU is 20 years, which means 20 years of historical and operational data that encompasses several shop visits, different operators, and Life limited parts. There is no “gold” standard when it comes to required APU paperwork. However, after nearly 2 decades in the industry, we have gained a strong knowledge of what documents are considered a satisfactory level of data.
If the APU is serviceable then you’ll need to show the current release certificate, shop report, test data sheet, borescope report, LRU/component listing and what level of workscope was applied to the unit and installed parts along with supporting documents. You’ll also need to confirm the APU has been preserved to cover the period the unit will be in storage. In addition to the current release data, you need to provide statements from the last operator such as a Non incident statement for the APU itself showing the current times and cycles which match the same times and cycles shown on a LLP Summary they also provide.
Beyond the supporting documents to show the current condition you also need to comprise data for the APUs historical movements and in many cases the LLP (life limited parts) back to birth. Back to birth will provide you with the life history of such components and considered a very important part of the APUs required paperwork. This includes the manufacture release certificate showing the part in NEW condition, installation records which can either be by previous shop visits showing LLPs being installed/removed or by way of a LLP Log card.
A minipack typically comes in the form of a PDF file which comprises all these documents into one easily readable file which should be in a organized manner for ease of viewing buy a potential buyer. All in all, the average minipack for a 20 year old APU is 200+/- pages and in some cases can be 500+ pages of documents.
