What it takes to make your APU 737 MAX compatible

Are you familiar with the APU used in the Boeing 737Max? You might be surprised to learn that it shares the same name as its predecessor, the 737NG. But here’s the twist: while they may bear the same model name, there are subtle differences that set them apart.

The Honeywell GTCP131-9B APU is the powerhouse behind both the Boeing 737Max and the 737NG. However, don’t let the shared name fool you – the APU for the 737Max has undergone a slight modification that renders most GTCP131-9Bs incompatible with the 737Max.

The crux of the issue lies in the APU’s placement and mounting within the 737Max. It sits in a slightly different position compared to the 737NG, necessitating different mounts to fit the APU snugly. In addition to the fitment of the APU, there have been some reliability and performance improvements which are required for MAX operations. In simpler terms, you can’t simply remove a 737NG APU and slap it onto a 737Max unless the APU has been tweaked to meet the Max’s specifications.

The good news is that there’s a solution. You can transform your non-Max-compliant APU to accommodate both NG and Max operations via incorporating a few service bulletins. Implementing such SB’s to a status equivalent to a series 41 is a prerequisite for transforming it into a Max-compliant APU. After this modification, your APU part number changes from 3800702-1 to 3800702-2, signifying its new capability.

However, like most transformations, this one isn’t without its complexities. The costs associated with modifying your APU can vary significantly, depending on its history and existing condition. For instance, an older APU that hasn’t received the latest modifications over the years will require a more substantial investment to transition from an NG APU to a Max-compliant one compared to a newer APU that might only need some part replacements.

It’s crucial to take stock of your APU’s configuration before making any decisions. Keep in mind that many of the SB requirements pertain to internal parts. If these haven’t been addressed in the past, you may need to disassemble the entire APU, exposing various components that might require repair or replacement. This can impact your overall shop visit costs.

In conclusion, the journey to maxify your GTCP131-9B APU for 737Max compatibility is not one-size-fits-all. It involves careful consideration of your APU’s history and condition, along with the implementation of the necessary modifications. With the right approach, you can ensure that your APU is ready to power both NG and Max aircraft, opening new possibilities in your aviation endeavors.
