Why TSR and TSO don’t tell the full story

TSN/CSN: Time/Cycles Since New. The amount of hours/cycles accumulated since the APU was manufactured
TSR/CSR: Time/Cycles Since Repair. The amount of hours/cycles accumulated since the APU was last repaired
TSO/CSO: Time/Cycles Since Overhaul: The amount of hours/cycles accumulated since the APU was last overhauled. 
TSHSV/CSHSV: Time/Cycles Since Heavy Shop Visit. The amount of hours/cycles accumulated since the APU has undergone an extensive workscope simiilar to an overhauled unit. 

Why TSR and TSO aren't the whole story...
When it comes to evaluating an Auxiliary Power Unit (APU), one of the most important factors to consider is the time elapsed since its last restoration. In the aviation world, many acronyms are commonly used, such as TSR (Time Since Repair), TSI (Time Since Inspection), and TSO (Time Since Overhaul). While these terms can provide a starting point in assessing the condition of an APU, they often don’t tell the whole story. In fact, relying solely on these acronyms can lead to misconceptions if you don’t dig deeper into the actual level of repair the unit has undergone.

The complexity behind TSR and repair labels...
For instance, you might come across an APU with a TSR of 0, which indicates that the APU has not been operated since its last repair. On paper, this might seem like a pristine unit. However, the term "REPAIRED" listed on the release certificate doesn't provide enough insight to determine the true integrity of the APU.

Let’s break it down: One APU certified as "REPAIRED" might have gone through an extensive repair process, where major modules were disassembled, and critical replacement parts were installed. Another APU, also labeled as "REPAIRED," might have undergone a much less comprehensive repair—perhaps just a minor adjustment to a Line Replacement Unit (LRU) or a simple defect correction. Despite both units being labeled as repaired, the level of work performed, the associated costs, and the future operational longevity of these APUs can differ significantly. This is why comparing APUs based on TSR alone isn’t enough to make a truly informed decision.

Another factor to consider is that not all APUs that go through extensive repairs are released with an "OVERHAULED" status, which would reset the TSO. Sometimes, even after major repairs, an APU is still tagged as "REPAIRED." This creates ambiguity in understanding the true depth of work completed on the unit.

Introducing TSHSV

However, it's essential to note that TSHSV is not a regulated term by any aviation authority—it's simply a reference we provide to give additional transparency and context to the APU’s condition.
